How to vote

Voting is by internet or telephone, any time from Wednesday, October 14 at 10:00 a.m. to Monday, October 26 at 8:00 p.m. If you'd rather not do it yourself, there is in-person help and a voting computer at the Township Office in Port Carling. You can vote from your kitchen table, whether that table is in Port Carling or Toronto.

How internet and telephone voting works

  1. Watch the mail. Before voting opens, the Township mails every person on the voters' list a letter with a PIN and instructions.
  2. When voting opens on October 14 at 10:00 a.m., go to the voting website in the letter (or call the phone number in it) and enter your PIN.
  3. Follow the on-screen or spoken instructions to mark and submit your ballot. It takes a few minutes. You can vote at any hour during the voting period.

This page explains the process in plain language, but the Township runs the vote. If this page and the official instructions ever differ, follow the official instructions. Never share your PIN with anyone, including any campaign. This website will never ask for it.

I didn't get my voter letter or PIN

This is the most common problem, and it can be fixed. Only the Township can fix it, though. If your letter hasn't arrived shortly before voting opens, or you've lost it, contact the Township of Muskoka Lakes Clerk's office. They can confirm you are on the voters' list and tell you how to get set up to vote.

Do this early. The letter goes to the mailing address the Township has on file, which for seasonal owners is often the cottage. Check where yours will be sent.

I own property in Muskoka Lakes but live elsewhere — can I vote?

Yes. You can vote in this election if you are a Canadian citizen, 18 or older, and you own or rent land in Muskoka Lakes — even if your main home is somewhere else. Spouses of owners and tenants can vote too.

And because the vote is online, you don't need to be in Muskoka to cast your ballot. You can vote from home in the city, any day from October 14 to 26.

Two things to do now:

  1. Confirm you are on the voters' list through the Township's elections page.
  2. Check the mailing address the Township has for you, so the PIN letter reaches you in October — not an empty cottage mailbox.

If you'd rather not use a computer

Telephone voting uses the same PIN letter: call the number provided and follow the spoken prompts on any phone.

You can also vote in person. During the voting period the Township runs a staffed help centre at the Municipal Office, 1 Bailey St., Port Carling, with people to assist you and a voting computer you can use. If you need help or an accessible option, the Township Clerk's office is the right place to ask. Contact details are on the official page.

You can vote if you are a Canadian citizen, 18 or older, and you either live in Muskoka Lakes, own or rent land in Muskoka Lakes, or are the spouse of someone who does.
